How to Setup Multiple Twitter Accounts with One Email Address

GMail, Google, Social Media, Tips, Twitter — By Matthew Tommasi on June 12, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Have you ever tried to signup for a second Twitter account using an email address that has already been used?

You can’t,

duplicate email

Twitter only allows you to have one account per unique email address.

There is a way around this and I will show you how. The only thing you need is a Gmail address.

Gmail has a nice feature where you can create aliases.

An alias is where you add “+somethingafter your Gmail username and before the “@gmail.com”

Eg,

My Gmail address is – matthewtommasi[at]gmail.com and for this guide I am going to create the following alias,

  • matthewtommasi+twitter1@gmail.com

With aliases,

  • You can have as many aliases as you want per Gmail username
  • Aliases can be as short as one character long after the + symbol, eg testuser+1@gmail.com

Before we move onto Twitter, we need to do two things with your Gmail account,

  1. Create a label
  2. Create a filter

Create a Label

Login to your Gmail account and next to the search field in Gmail click on the create a filter link,

create a filter

In the To field, enter your Gmail username + alias, then click <Next Step>,

create filter

Check the option Apply the label, then select New label,

new label

Enter a new label name, then click <OK>,

new label name

Create a Filter

Click on <Create Filter>,

create filter

Your filter has now been created and any incoming mail to that address will also have that label applied to it,

filter and label created

Done! Your Gmail alias has now been setup.

Now send a test email (from yourself) to your newly created alias to see if it works,

test email

Successfully received and the new label is also visible,

success

success

Head over to Twitter and signup for a new account.

In the email field enter your newly created Gmail alias, then click <Create My Account>,

signup

Success!

You have just created a new Twitter account using Gmail aliases,

successful login

Just repeat the above steps if you want to add multiple Twitter accounts to your primary Gmail account.. by using Gmail aliases.

Enjoy!

does this work for facebook as well? I'm trying to create seperate facebook pages for "characters" from a book, but I don't have 6 seperate people behind the characters, is there any way I can use an email aliases to have "separate emails" that all come back to me?
  • Yes Gmail allows 'plus addressing' (aka aliases).

So in theory you could have many, many alias emails all hanging off your
    primary Gmail account.

    eg,
    example+1@gmail.com, example+2@gmail.com, example+3@gmail.com,
example+4@gmail.com, example+5@gmail.com, etc could all hang off your
    primary account example@gmail.com

  • I have about 20 Twitter accounts, half are active and the rest will be soon. To set up another Twitter account, just logout and create a new account the same way you created the first one, however each account requires a different email address. If you have your own domain name, just set up a forwarding address to your existing address, then you don't have to check two email accounts. Also a cellphone can only be linked to one Twitter account. http://4xindia.com
To manage multiple accounts at the same time without logging in and out, I recommend using Twhirl, but Tweetdeck and Seesmic Desktop are a good popular choices too.
  • Sub-addressing is by no means restricted only to gmail. If you'd rather use something else, check to see whether your mail server supports it!

  • Interesting trick! I don't know if I'd ever take advantage of it because I think it's useful to tie DMs and followers to just one email, but I'll pass it along. You never know when it might come in handy.

  • Hi Carri

IMHO I think having multiple Twitter accounts can be quite beneficial
especially if you want to keep your interests separated, eg personal vs
    business.

And using a Twitter client that supports multiple accounts like CoTweet (my
personal fav), can make keeping track of DM's so simple.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • Indeed. The alternative, which I use as I have my own domain with unlimited email accounts to create, is I create twitter1@domain.com, twitter2@domain.com, etc., and have them auto-forward wherever I choose.

  • well, I thought only few people know this method. go to see my example, BullishChina.com
if your email address is : abcdef@gmail.com, then “a.bcdef”, “ab.cdef”, “abc.def”, “abcd.ef” … … “a.b.c.d.e.f” all these emails belong to you and they are nicknames, none can apply these Gmail accounts. More poweful, you can add “+” to identify what kind of serive you once apply and signup.
  • Thanks for the comment.
