How to use Ping.fm

Ping.fm, Social Media — By Matthew Tommasi on 10 May 2009 6:59 pm

There are so many social networking sites around today and even more appearing on a weekly basis.

If you are like me, it is likely that you are a member of more than one social network like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc. If you are one of the hardcore you could be a member of many, many more.

How many hours would you have spent filling in your profiles, joining groups and updating your statuses within these social circles? It starts to add up.

Wouldn’t it be good to be able to update all your social statuses from one place? Well you can with Ping.fm.

Ping.fm allows you to send updates to all, or just a handful of your favourite sites. Updates can be made from your browser, email or sms. If you have an iPhone and are using the Twitter application Tweetie, checkout my guide on how to integrate Ping.fm with Tweetie.

This guide will show you how to save time and be more efficient when it comes to updating your social statuses.

Firstly, you will need to make sure you have added all your social networks. For this guide, I have only added Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

There are three different methods of posting – status updates, micro-blogs and blogging.. which I found a little confusing when it came to configuring my social networks. Do I set them as status only, or micro-blogging only, or both, or what? And what about updating via email?

So I decided to test these out to see how they worked for real. Here is what I have found when testing out the various posting methods of Ping.fm.

Posting from the dashboard

  • Only Status Updates enabled

I only enabled Status Updates in Ping.fm for my social networks,

screenshot00311

Then sent out a ping to test,

screenshot00112

I found that by having only status updates enabled, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace statuses updated successfully,

screenshot00213

screenshot00312

screenshot0048

  • Only Micro-blogging enabled

I only enabled Micro-blogs in Ping.fm for my social networks,

twitter MB

facebook MB

myspace MB

Then sent out a ping to test,

microblog ping

I found that by having only micro-blogging enabled, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace statuses did NOT update,

screenshot00110

screenshot00211

screenshot00310

  • Both enabled (Status updates and Micro-blogs)

Enabling both status updates and micro-blogs on my social sites Twitter, Facebook and MySpace,

screenshot00114

screenshot00214

screenshot00314

Then sent out a ping to test,

screenshot00113

I found that by having both status updates and micro-blogs enabled, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace statuses updated successfully,

screenshot0049

Conclusion: I would personally leave both status updates and micro-blogs enabled when posting from Ping.fm’s dashboard as your social network’s will also get updated.

Status Updates via Email

You can update your statuses via email. Just go to ping.fm/email and use the email address displayed,

post by email

I did the following email post tests on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace:

  • Email with Subject AND email body,

subject and body

This results in,

Twitter only capturing the email body and not the email subject,

screenshot0027

Facebook only capturing the email body and not the email subject,

screenshot0037

MySpace only capturing the email body and not the email subject,

screenshot0046

  • Email with Subject only and no email body,

subject only no body

This results in,

Twitter updating successfully,

twitter successFacebook updating successfully,

facebook success

MySpace does not update,

myspace fails

  • Email with email body only and no subject,

screenshot0055

This results in,

Twitter updating successfully,

screenshot0066

Facebook updating successfully,

screenshot0076

MySpace updating successfully,

screenshot0087

Conclusion: If you want to update your statuses via Ping.fm’s email post functionality, then just put your post in the email body only.

Grammar

You may have noticed that sometimes the grammar does not look quite correct when sending out an update from the dashboard.

For example, if I sent out a post saying “Hey what’s up?” it would look like this in Facebook and MySpace,

screenshot0067

screenshot0077

Ping.fm has a feature called “Adjust Grammar” which is found at Settings > Default Settings > Adjust grammar

screenshot0088

screenshot0094

screenshot00215

By enabling Adjust Grammar (for Status Updates) this will add “said:” just before your update message, and your updates will look that little bit better.

For example, if I sent out a post saying “Hey what’s up?” the word “said:” would be added just before your post. Grammatically it is more correct. It would look like this in Facebook and MySpace,

screenshot00116

screenshot00315

Even sending out an email update (only with the email body populated) successfully updates Facebook and MySpace,

screenshot0068

screenshot0078

Conclusion: If would enable the Adjust Grammar feature so that post’s look that little bit better.. grammatically.

Posting to a single service

If you only want to post to a single service just select the one you want from the drop down list,

screenshot00410

screenshot0057

Only Twitter has been updated and NOT Facebook and Myspace,

screenshot00117

.

As you can see Ping.fm is a powerful Social Media tool where you can update many of your social networks from a single place. This can save you a lot of time if you are continually updating your statuses.

Hopefully this guide benefits you in some way.

    Well done mate.

Yeah once things are setup it makes distributing your content a lot easier and helps to extend your reach deeper into the social web.

Hey M@tt, I just finished testing using Hootsuite to send tweets to Ping.FM as well submitting my blog RSS feed directly to Ping.FM. The integration is pretty sweet. Now aside from posting to multiple sites, I can also get analytics from Hootsuite's link shortening service.

I will be posting the screenshots and results tomorrow on my blog. :) It was painful and tedious to setup but now that it's done – I'm cruising. :)

Thanks for the comment Brian. Good luck with integrating all your other newtworks. It's never ending isn't it!

Thanks for taking the time to share this. Much appreciated. I know it does take a lot of time to get the screen shots and create a guide like this. I am surprised that Ping.FM does not create more user guides like this.

Now tot test this for the other 42 social media sites! Yikes!

Fantastic post – detailed run-down. Much appreciated.

I had been doing a lot of this via ShareIn – here's my article: http://bit.ly/2AkvAs

This pulls in a lot more options, tho. One thing I don't like is how there's a full-blown toolbar for “ping this”.. as opposed to a simple link for the Firefox bookmark/toolbar. Waste of real estate IMO.

Thanks for the great sharing of your tests with ping.fm.

I have connected ping.fm with hootsuite.com through an app available on ping.fm. Hootsuite offers some additional features for Twitter that I find excellent. While at Hootsuite I can easily route my twitter updates to my other social media accounts at the same time – via the seamless connection to ping.fm

    I'm stoked :-)

After re-reading that, it almost sounded sarcastic but it wasn't. The guide was good, and I also suggest leaving all methods enabled due to that same potential confusion.

  13. adam says:

    Hi Matt,

Great “how-to” guide. The reason your micro-blog test did not work is because you had your default method set to “status”, and used your default method to test. If you changed the dropdown on the dashboard to microblogs (or default method to microblogs), it should have went.
